There’s no question about it. We love our pets. Why is that? Ask any pet owner and they will come up with their own reasons as individual as the cats, dogs, fish, birds, lizards, and snakes they take care of on a daily basis. For most of us, it is a personal decision and most pet parents will agree on several points about why they are so thankful for their pet or pets.

1. The Cuddle Factor

For dog and cat owners and even reptile and bird parents, nothing beats a good cuddle and maybe a nap with our furry, feathered or scaled loved ones.

2. Walk It Off

Dogs (and sometimes cats) like to go for walks. It gives a pet owner a chance to get out, change perspectives, and relax from whatever happened that day. Some pet parents and their companions even lose weight in the process.

3. The Official Home Greeter

Dogs love to meet you at the door, but any cat owner will also attest to the number of times your feline is also waiting to welcome you home. Birds chirp their greetings and lonesome reptiles also come out to say hi.

4. Doing the Right Thing

Dogs (and sometimes cats) like to go for walks. It gives a pet owner a chance to get out, change perspectives, and relax from whatever happened that day. Some pet parents and their companions even lose weight in the process.

5. Music to Our Ears

Dogs use their own special calls and barks much to their owner’s delight. Contented cats will purr loud enough to be heard across the room. Birds definitely strike up the vocal chords to tell you how they are feeling, too.

6. Let’s Play

Dogs and cats love to play. Birds like to frolic, too. So do many other animals. Humans tend to forget playtime as they get older so the sheer joy of a good romp with your cat or dog or bird is a great childish thing to do. Playtime in a park playing fetch with Fido or dangling a ribbon for Fluffy will entertain everyone, especially the human in the area.

7. Medical Benefits

It’s true. Having a pet has been medically proven to reduce anxiety and blood pressure, calm accident victims, and provide support to those with muscle disorders, paralysis and other health issues. Cat purrs definitely have healing benefits. Emotional service animals have made an impact in our modern culture and provide a source of comfort and security for those who need it.

8. Put On a Happy Face!

It’s true. Even if you are down and out, nothing beats some love from your furred, feathered, or scaled companion. Even the saddest, most miserable times get better with a few licks, pets, pecks, and nudges.

9. Everyone Loves a Comedian!

Face it! Millions of YouTube videos can’t be wrong. Pets are funny. They do amusing things. We love them for it. It gives us something to talk about with at work, to film, to share, and enjoy!

10. We Sing Their Praise!

Dogs and cats have inspired a wealth of songs about them and it ranges from simple nursery rhymes to hip-twisting rock like Elvis Presley’s “You Ain’t Nothing But A Hound Dog.” Television’s Big Bang Theory has made a tribute to “Soft Kitty, Warm Kitty” and then there’s the old children’s classic “B-I-N-G-O” , just in case you forgot the dog’s name. Famed musician Scatman Crothers even penned and sang “Everybody Wants To Be A Cat” for Disney’s 1970 classic, “The Aristocats.”

Without a doubt, our pets give us so much to be thankful for every day of our lives. We need them, miss them when we are away, and love them like no other creature on earth. We give thanks for all they give to us.
