When it comes to identifying missing animals, there are no better tools than microchips for pets. Whereas collars and identification tags can be easily damaged or removed, pet microchips are permanent, lifelong devices which police stations and animal rescue shelters can use to reunite a missing animal with its family.

What are microchips for pets and why are they so helpful?

Pet microchips are tiny electronic devices which can contain all the electronic information needed to identify a missing animal and its owners. A pet microchip is about the size of a grain of rice and your veterinarian will embed it underneath the skin of your pet, usually between the shoulder blades. It is so small that it does not cause any discomfort to the animal. Since it is embedded under the skin rather than attached on top of the skin (like a dog collar), a microchip cannot easily be removed.

Once you purchase the pet microchip, you also have to register it.

Then you can enter your name and address into a pet recovery database. This way, if your pet becomes lost, police stations and animal shelters can scan the microchip and find your contact information. It is important to remember you must keep all information up to date.
