| The following is a list that you should be able to check off without batting an eye. This is only a quick guide for what you should look for before you breed and is not all inclusive. The bitch: - Is she show quality?
- Is she a champion?
- Does she have both parents and grandparents that are champions?
- Is she free from hereditary disease?
- Are her parents and grandparents tested and free from hip dysplasia?
- Is she free from brucellosis?
- Is she old enough to breed?
The stud: - Is he show quality?
- Is he a champion?
- Does he have both parents and grandparents that are champions?
- Is he free from hereditary disease?
- Are his parents and grandparents tested and free from hip dysplasia?
- Is he free from brucellosis?
- Is he mature enough to breed?
Miscellaneous criteria: - Do you have homes already for all pups?
- Are you prepared to offer a guarantee for the health of the pups?
- If during the lifetime of the pups any need to be returned for any reason will you be able to take that dog and find a new home for him or her?
- Will you require all non-show quality pups to be sold with a spay/neuter agreement?
- Will you fully screen all prospective buyers?
- Can you offer support and advice to your puppy buyers?
- Do you have the money to cover a stud fee possible c-section and complications vaccinations?
- Are you ok with not making any money off of breeding?
- Are you prepared for lost wages from missing work and sleepless nights when the puppies are born?
These questions are merely a starting point. If you cannot or will not meet these criteria perhaps breeding at this time is not the best choice for you or your dog. |
