Prospective Breeders Checklist
A Prospective Breeder’s Checklist

The following is a list that you should be able to check off without batting an eye.  This is only a quick guide for what you should look for before you breed and is not all inclusive.

The bitch:

  1. Is she show quality?
  2. Is she a champion?
  3. Does she have both parents and grandparents that are champions?
  4. Is she free from hereditary disease?
  5. Are her parents and grandparents tested and free from hip dysplasia?
  6. Is she free from brucellosis?
  7. Is she old enough to breed?

The stud:

  1. Is he show quality?
  2. Is he a champion?
  3. Does he have both parents and grandparents that are champions?
  4. Is he free from hereditary disease?
  5. Are his parents and grandparents tested and free from hip dysplasia?
  6. Is he free from brucellosis?
  7. Is he mature enough to breed?

Miscellaneous criteria:

  1. Do you have homes already for all pups?
  2. Are you prepared to offer a guarantee for the health of the pups?
  3. If during the lifetime of the pups any need to be returned for any reason will you be able to take that dog and find a new home for him or her?
  4. Will you require all non-show quality pups to be sold with a spay/neuter agreement?
  5. Will you fully screen all prospective buyers?
  6. Can you offer support and advice to your puppy buyers?
  7. Do you have the money to cover a stud fee possible c-section and complications vaccinations?
  8. Are you ok with not making any money off of breeding?
  9. Are you prepared for lost wages from missing work and sleepless nights when the puppies are born?

These questions are merely a starting point.  If you cannot or will not meet these criteria perhaps breeding at this time is not the best choice for you or your dog.
