It leaves the dog looking like a cute puppy. It cuts your grooming time in half because of the more precise cut compared to a universal comb for less scissoring time. 78919-136 Cryogen-X or 78919-596 Elite – Size 4 leaves 3/8” This skip tooth blade is great for fluffy type coats such as Poodles and Bichons. Clippers this covers is pivot and mag motors RAKE 78928-310 10 course teeth rakes 78928-320 18 medium teeth rakes 78928-300 wide 18 teeth course The first application in pet styling is on heavy double coated dogs. Many dogs come to be groomed in the spring with a winters worth of dead coat. You can remove bulk amounts of dead coat by simple running the rake over and through the coat with long smooth strokes. First, use a course rake with the widest spaces between the teeth. Oster gives you two to choose from an 18 wide and a 10 tooth narrow. Both are good at removing bulk dead coat. You can continue raking until the rake glides through easily or until you have achieved the desired look. If you need to remove more hair you can then move to the rake with the teeth that are closer together. 18 tooth medium rake. This will remove even more hair. You can use the rakes before, during and after bathing and drying. The skin is more pliable when wet and with the addition of the shampoo on the coat the dead hair slides away more easily. I like to remove the really thick mats before the bath and but the majority of dead coat is removed during the bath. Breeds that you might try the new tool on would be huskies, shepards, goldens, collies, retrievers, setters, etc. The second application is to assist with carding. A term used to describe when you assist the shedding process by removal the dead under coat. You can use them on spaniel and terrier type coats, how much depends on the dogs. Is it a show dog or a pet? Why does it matter? The rake does cut a small amount of coat. On a coat that is hand stripped and needs to be in its most natural state this tool can be over used. For these same breeds that are pets whose back coats get clipped, running the rake over them before clipping or bathing will remove dead coat that may not have come out otherwise. When clipping before raking or carding, you cut the hairs off close to the skin. The hair no longer has its natural weight or length to shed naturally. Raking will remove the dead coat from the common opening. This will promote a healthier coat by maintaining the skins natural process. Dead hair is no longer jamming up the common opening so the natural oils and bacteria can be wicked to the skins surface as is should be. The third application is trimming on most drop and double coated breeds. Some dogs just need a little definition, such as around the shoulders or hips. This tool can achieve that for you in minutes. Simply rake over the coat that needs tailored a few times and you will see the change. COMBS
78928-130 7”medium/coarse I first use them during the prepping process, starting with a comb that has longer teeth and wider space between them. This loosens and removes small amounts of dead hair. Then I follow with a finer, shorter tooth comb to remove more dead hair left behind for the first comb. This is not to demat or to replace the Oster rake procedures, but can be practiced on double coated dogs before a bath, during and after following raking. This should also be the steps taken on fluffy coats after they have been dried and brushed with a slicker. The steps above are part of the finishing touches before clipping and scissoring. Why go to all this trouble? Removing dead under coat on double coated breeds before and during a bath will speed drying time. Less hair will be blowing out from the dryer and you will make up the lost time during your finish. As for fluffies, the dead coat you remove before clipping and scissoring will allow you to create a better finish faster, less clipper lines and better scissor finish. They also come in handy during the scissoring process. Using a size appropriate comb for the dog you are working on can speed the clipping and scissoring process by lifting the coat up more evenly instead of manipulating it up. What I mean is using a small comb on a thick, longer haired poodle can place hair in a unnatural position before scissoring and when the hair does fall in place your scissoring will not look as crisp. Oster has provided a new comb set that addresses all your needs. From a small 7” comb, to the two larger size poodle type combs.
Hi-velocity dryers
To start the drying process you must have a squeaky clean dog. The cleaner the dog the faster it dries. Oils left behind in a coat seemingly hold moister in. Also a lot of conditioner left in a coat slows the drying process. Do not forget dead undercoat also holds water. Many believe there is a lot of time saved by cage drying. I am not one of those people. I find with the modern force air dryers on the market, cage drying (cool to warm air) should be left for special need pets only. I start by quickly force drying over pets while in the tub to start the straightening coat. Then I place each in their resting area until I am finished washing all my pets for the day. I start drying my smaller curly coated dogs first. Next my large curly coated breeds are dried and then my straighter coats, saving my heavy double coats till the end. This allows the collie types, the most time to air dry. When bathing I follow the opposite order as mentioned above for optimum results. For you show Poodle people, my maintenance baths on my show coats are brushed out, conditioned heavy, forced off quickly and then air dry most of the day. If it is nice outside they can play in the sun a bit. Coats feel great after a quick force over and fluffing. Mastering a force dryer takes time. I recommend a slowly methodical movement, keeping the nozzle far enough away from dogs skin to allow hair to be blown straight away. If you are to close with the nozzle to the pet’s skin the ends of coat will whip around and you will cause tangling. The close forced air also causes skin to be stimulated. Not a natural process for the skin to be exposed to. Some like to go in circles but the important part is that you watch the skin as the coat starts to dry. Work around the dog evenly. You will want to rotate around the dog about 4 or 5 times. I start at the rear of the dog and force over every inch. Saving the head for last where I remove the nozzle or use the stand dry. You can see exactly were it is or is not dry and this give you an opportunity to notice any abnormalities on the skin. Coats dried, separate and look fluffy; coats that are wet, stick together and are kinky looking at the skin. Once dry I take a stand dryer with warm air and brush the dog out. Now the pet is ready for me to finish. I have been grooming a while now and have dried a few dogs, many different ways. This is my process today but with the next great invention could change tomorrow. Just remember how the dog is going to react and that there is no substitute for a great prep. It is easy to be a fast stylist when you have perfectly prepared pets to work on. HYDROSURGE Bathing Systems The skin of your pet’s most important job is to protect the inside from the harmful effects of our environment by way of forming an effective barrier from the outside world. This means there is a whole world of good and bad microorganisms living on you pet skin along with many different skin cells that all have different jobs. We need to maintain as close to their normal environment as possible for both microorganisms and the cell making up the skins layers by not changing it with harsh chemicals, rough bathing techniques and low quality shampoos. Our Hydrosurge bathing system and shampoos are made to clean with little effect on the natural flora of the pet’s skin. Our shampoo is made of all natural extracts that clean without stripping the skin and coat. Great for everyday grooming as well as conditioning of show dogs. The bathing system itself is special, in that it has a unique nozzle that combines a high volume of water mixed with air and shampoo to safely remove dead cells. Water is often over looked as a therapeutic agent as stated in the Veterinarians text book, Muller and Kirk’s Small Animal Dermatology. With cell layered like shingles on a roof and being pasted down with glandular fluids, the volume of water mixed with shampoo, break down glandular fluid. The water can get under skin cells and gently lift them away and wash them down the drain. The bacteria react to poorly balanced Ph and harsh chemicals. To have a good balance the Ph is best for most breeds at a slightly higher alkaline. The skin cells react to hash stimuli and chemicals. Did you know that the skin’s cells normally reproduce in a cycle about 6 weeks or so? However, when you stimulate them with a simple 10 blade that normal process is sped up to almost ½ in the clipped area. You can see how important it is not to use too much water pressure or rough handling on the skin. It is not normal and can cause issue. The HydroSurge bathing system is the perfect cleaning tool when you are trying to maintain normal skin flora. To enhance your prep job don’t forget to use our Oster Grooming tools. Removal of even a small amount of dead hair before the bath will help clear the common openings where the hair is housed. The hair acts like a wick as you card, rack, comb or brush. The oils, dead cells and some bacteria are brought to the surface to be cleaned away. Removing the dead coat can be done during the bath too. Use the same tools list above to remove even more hair. The tools are able to work even better in the tub because the skin is more pliable when wet. When the skin is at its softest, the dead hair almost falls out. The other great thing is that there is little dead hair blowing around when the dog is blown dry after the bath. It remains clumped when wet to be tossed in the trash. Along with the skin being more pliable when wet, the nails are also softer. Even if you clip before the bath you can use the Oster nail grinder to finish nails following the bath for a smoother finish. Remember when caring for the ears they are just an extension of the skin. So chose gentle products to flush dead skin cells, bacteria and glandular fluids way. I fill the ear, gently rub the canal and let them shake it out. Follow with cotton ball and a good bath. Following the bath, I use a HydroSurge force air dryer to remove excess water. Many breeds such as collies, labs, Shepard can benefit by air drying a bit. It saves time and the skin remains pliable as long as it is still damp for the remaining coat to be removed. I only use dryer on no heat settings or just let them set a while. Some full drop coats can sit a while too. Such as Shih Tzu, spaniels and setters. The breed that should never be air dried is poodle type coats in shorter pet trims. With these breeds, I follow the force dryer with my Oster stand dryer to finish the job while using a brush to remove any remaining tangles and dead coat. When brushing remember long smooth strokes. Just touch the skin and brush away. When dog is dry and brushed check your work with one of Oster's new metal combs. At this point you should have a dog in perfect condition for Clipping with our new Performax clipper and Crogenic-X blade. Quieter, cooler running housing, no vents to blow air, soft grip housing with power to spare. In closing remember the prep is the most important part of the groom. It is all about the health of the pet. Without a good prep you can not produce the optimum coat condition for trimming. |
