Poisonous Plants and Cats

Plants and Your Cat

Plants can add a much-needed finishing touch to any dcor. However if you have a feline companion that beautiful plant could be your cats worst enemy. There are dozens of plants that are poisonous and even fatal to your feline friend. While in some cases just parts of a plant (such as the bark leaves seeds berries roots tubers spouts etc.) might be poisonous as a rule it is good practice to eliminate the plant in its entirety to keep your cat safe. If you absolutely cannot part with your plant then it needs to be out of reach from your cat.

If your cat accidentally ingests any part of a plant considered poisonous rush the cat to your veterinarian as quickly as possible. Taking the plant with you will assist your veterinarian in identifying the poison and the best way to treat it.

This list is of the most commonly-found plants. Lilies are by far the most toxic to your feline friend and should be avoided if at all possible. If you have any questions about the possible toxicity of a plant to your cat the Animal Poison Control Center has a 24/7 hotline to assist veterinarians and animal owners. Be advised that there is a consultation fee for using this service but if it could save your cats life it is definitely worth it! Their toll-free number is 888-426-4435.
